  1. Swollen region of an underground stem or
  2. root, usually modified for storing food. The
  3. potato is a stem tuber, as shown by the
  4. presence of terminal and lateral buds, the
  5. `eyes' of the potato. Root tubers, developed
  6. from adventitious roots, lack these. Both
  7. types of tuber can give rise to new
  8. individuals and so provide a means of
  9. vegetative reproduction. Unlike a bulb, a
  10. tuber persists for one season only; new
  11. tubers developing on a plant in the following
  12. year are formed in different places. See also
